Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming

Sustain is a powerful alliance of organisations and communities working together for a better system of food and farming. Together, we advocate policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, enrich society and culture, and promote equity.

 Sustain policy room, 9-10 January

Sustain will be curating and hosting the policy room at ORFC, which will explore diverse topics in the world of sustainable food and farming.  Sessions will span affordable local food retail, public procurement, and farming policies across the four nations of the UK.

Session Friday 10 January, 2pm GMT

Organic: the preserve of the privileged?

We don’t believe it should be. Healthy, sustainably produced food should be accessible to everyone – not just people on higher incomes.

Sustain’s project Bridging the Gap and Soil Association have convened a panel of speakers working across the food supply chain to explore the opportunities to make organic food available and affordable to everyone and fair to farmers.

We delve into the challenges of achieving optimal scale alongside ethical practice, the market for smaller independent retailers and the responsibility of the larger retailer, and what policy shift we need to see in support of enabling access to organic for all.
